Kanepi Captures First Title
Monday, 19 July 2010 07:40

25-year-old Kanepi wins her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title, from her third final. She was runner-up at Hasselt in 2006 (to Kim Clijsters) and at Tokyo in 2008 (to Caroline Wozniacki).

Kanepi becomes the first Estonian Tour champion, having also been the first from her country to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal (2008 Roland Garros) and the first to crack the Top 20. Before today Kanepi had beaten Pennetta twice, but never on clay. Pennetta, who was the defending champion at Palermo, is now 9-11 in Tour singles finals.
"I'm very happy to win my first career title. This is the best moment of my career. After doing well at Wimbledon, now I've confirmed I'm playing really well. Flavia was playing well but today I was more aggressive in the most important moments of the match."

Italians Alberta Brianti and Sara Errani capture their first Tour doubles title together; the win marks 30-year-old Brianti’s first Tour title of any kind. Errani now owns five Tour doubles titles, as well as two Tour singles titles - collected back-to-back here at Palermo and at Portoroz in 2008.
