Copa del Sol football expands in 2012

Wednesday 4 January 2012
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Spartak Moscow, FC Anji (Russia), FC Kobenhavn (Denmark) and Dalian Aerbin FK (China) complete the line-up for the tournament that starts 28th January. Shakhtar Donetsk are among the favorites, however F.C Anji boasts Samuel Eto'o ex-FIFA World Footballer of the Year who is expected to play.

The twelve teams confirmed representing seven nations compete for the third edition of Copa del Sol to be played in the Spanish cities of La Manga and Benidorm.

“The partnership with IEC in Sports to create this tournament fills a valuable gap in the FIFA calendar, providing pre-season games for Scandinavian and East European Clubs as well as competitive environment for Clubs during the winter break.' said Jo Bergsvand, Tournament Manager from NPFL, Norwegian Professional Football League

The six teams in the La Manga group includes the 2011 Ukrainian champions and Ukraine Cup winners FC Shakhtar Donetsk, and Russian side FC Anji, current 7th in the Russian Premier League. The Scandinavian opposition in the group includes Danish national champions and league leaders FC Kobenhavn, Norwegian Cup winner 2011, Aalesund FK and league runner-up Tromso IL and Kalmar FF (8th Swedish League 2011).

The Benidorm Group is headed up by Russian Spartak Mosow, current 4th in the Russian Premier League and 2011 Norwegian league winner Molde FK. The group is completed by Rosenborg BK (3rd Norwegian League 2011), IFK Göteborg (7th Swedish League 2011), FC Olimpija Ljublijana (current 3rd Slovenian League) and Dalian Aerbin FC (Chinese Super League).

”We will host broadcast all matches and have live distribution planned across 40 territories.  Adding Dalian makes this the first Chinese Super League team in the tournament history”, says Magnus Malmros, Project Manager, Copa del Sol at IEC in Sports.

Format
Copa del Sol 2012 is organized in a group format where the 12 participating teams meet in 3 rounds followed by a Final for the winning teams.  All 19 matches will be produced and distributed by TV across Europe and other continents.
