Following its recent unprecedented grant of the broadcast rights in Europe and Africa (*) to the prestigious IAAF World Athletics Series 2010 to 2013, IEC in Sports, the Stockholm-based International Sports Rights Agency, is delighted to announce the conclusion of its first agreement for this major athletics package.
Under the terms of the agreement, SVT and TV4 will jointly broadcast the rights to the series of events, with the exact sharing and broadcast arrangement between the two major broadcasters to be decided in due course. The Swedish broadcasters will be amongst the first new partners on board for the World Indoor Championships in Doha in a few weeks’ time. “We are thrilled to be able to announce this deal with our close and long-term partners from Sweden, SVT and TV4”, commented Jonas Persson, CEO of IEC in Sports. “Our entire team has spent the past few weeks and months carefully assessing every inch of the marketplace for the best possible commercial arrangements for IAAF, its sponsors and the sport of Athletics. The deal with SVT and TV4, with all of its improved elements versus the past, clearly validates IAAF’s bold and adventurous decision to shake things up”, concluded Persson. “We are very excited that we have agreed the 2010-2013 IAAF World Athletics Series with IEC in Sports”, said Hans Pekkari (Head of Sports at TV4) and Rolf Porsborn (Head of Sports Rights at SvT) in a joint statement. SvT previously held the rights to IAAF WAS through EBU and has sub-licensed certain rights to the outdoor World Championships to TV4 following TV4’s EBU membership in 2004. “We believe that there is great potential for athletics during the coming years”. “Sweden has had some fantastic results the last 10 years and with the likely Championship comeback from triple jump star Christian Olsson in the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, in March, 2010, plus many promising young athletes we are very optimistic the coming years will be equally successful for Sweden”, continued Pekkari/Porsborn Commenting on the deal, Lamine Diack, IAAF President said “I am delighted to welcome the first major TV deal of our new partners IEC in Sports for the IAAF World Athletics Series of competitions.
